CSEA Members Rally for
Rerement Security ...... 4
A Message From The CSEA President:
We have a few things I want you all to be aware or reminded
of. It was voted on at the April 22nd chapter meeting who our
second delegate and alternate will be to attend the CSEA Annual
Conference with me at the end of July. Toni McCall is the sec-
ond delegate and Glen Harvey is the alternate (in case one of us is
unable to go for some reason).
We are seeking input on the resolutions that were sent out in
March and again in April. If anyone has any feedback please send
me an email. The delegates will be voting on the resolutions based
on member feedback. We want to hear from YOU!
Do not forget CSEA will be having the ratification vote on Article
24 during the regular chapter meeting on Wednesday, May 20th
from 12-1 p.m. in SU-137. The voting time will also be extended
for an additional hour from 1-2 p.m. with release time requested.
I look forward to seeing you at this months meeting!

CSEA Members Rally for Retirement
Security
SACRAMENTO--CSEA joined firefighters, teachers and other school staff
in Sacramento to protest an expected ballot measure that would elimi-
nate retirement security for millions of Californians. The demonstration
took place outside a meeting hosted for proponents of the effort by the
right-wing Reason Foundation, featuring former San Jose Mayor Chuck
Reed and former San Diego City Council member Carl DeMaio.

CSEA members rally for retirement security
Californians for Retirement Security, a coalition of more than 1.2 million
public employees and retirees, organized the protest. The rally spotlighted
the true intentions of the ballot measure: to dismantle the promised retire-
ment benefits for millions of public employees that teach our children, pro-
tect our communities and provide vital public services. CSEA Area A Direc-
tor Martha Penry spoke at the rally, explaining that these two politicians,
grasping to remain relevant, are targeting people who have dedicated their
lives to public service.
"Their ballot measure would destroy my careful retirement planning," Penry
said. "I have worked hard all my life and have earned my pension. I don’t
think it’s fair for them to pull the rug out from under me at this point in my
career."
Reed and DeMaio announced plans for the new ballot measure in
mid-March but have not released details. In 2014, Reed failed to put
a measure on the statewide ballot; DeMaio, backed by the Tea Par-
ty, lost a hotly-contested Congressional race in San Diego last year.
Their new effort is expected to be financed by Texas billionaire
John Arnold, a former Enron executive who has bankrolled previous
efforts in California to slash promised retirement benefits to Califor-
nia public employees, including more than $200,000 in 2014. An
Arnold-funded measure to undermine retirement security was
thrown off the ballot last year in Ventura County by a judge, who
ruled it was illegal.
According to a report by Reuters, the new Reed/DeMaio measure
“will take aim at CalPERS.” It is unclear whether the proposed ballot
measure will be drafted as a statute, which requires 365,880 valid
signatures, or a constitutional amendment, which requires 585,407
valid signatures.
“This new effort is likely to eliminate retirement security for millions
of more Californians, worsen economic inequality in our state, and
undermine the ability to attract and retain quality firefighters,
teachers, police and other public servants,” said Dave Low, CSEA
Executive Director and Chairman of Californians for Retirement Se-
curity. “We are confident we can defeat it.”
